Birmingham Green Veterans Honored by Local SAR Chapter

Military veterans residing at Birmingham Green Senior Living Facility in Manassas were honored by two Compatriots of the Sgt Maj John Champe (SMJC) Chapter Virginia SAR. Wearing Colonial attire similar to that worn by Militia soldiers from Northern Virginia, the duo presented colors then gave a presentation titled "I am Old Glory", a short story about the history of the Flag of the United States and the various conflicts it has flown over. The story about the flag was followed by a presentation on what Veterans Day means and what it means to be a Veteran. It was emphasized that service in the United States military is a job that requires one to write a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount up to and including their life.

The staff at Birmingham Green prepared Certificates of Appreciation for each veteran in residence. The Certificates were presented by the two Compatriots from the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter.

Following the presentation to veterans, the SMJC Chapter presented Certificates of Appreciation to Alicia Boykin, Life Enrichment Director at Birmingham Greek and to Dennis Marfo, Life Enrichment manager, for arranging the event for veterans. The facility was presented a National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Certificate of Commendation for "Exemplary Patriotism in the display of the Flag of the United States". To earn the Commendation a facility must illuminate the flag if flown at night, and retire the flag when worn, torn, or soiled.
