Brochure contest winners rewarded at Willard Middle School in Aldie
The top three student designed tri-fold brochures were given cash awards by the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter Virginia SAR

Three Willard Middle School students were surprised on Tuesday, January 30 when they were called out of class to meet the school principal, several teachers, and a man dressed in Revolutionary War era clothing. The occasion was to recognize and reward students for their tri-fold brochures submitted for the SAR Brochure Contest. Kayla Nguyen's brochure was judged best of 557 brochures submitted for the contest. Harshini Amaranth's brochure was judged as the second-best brochure and Julia Gross' brochure was judged as the third-best brochure. Each student was awarded a check and Certificate of Accomplishment. Barry Schwoerer, president of the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter, Virginia SAR made the presentations.
The Sergeant Moses Adams Memorial Middle School Brochure Contest is sponsored by the National Society Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and coordinated at the local level by the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter, Virginia SAR. The winning brochure was sent to the Virginia Sons of the American Revolution Brochure contest for judging against brochures submitted by other SAR Chapters in Virginia. Willard Middle School Social Sciences teacher, Charles Hansen, a SAR Compatriot, introduced the contest to the school for the 2023-2024 school year. A total of 557 brochures were received. Mr. Hansen coordinated judging to select the top 21 brochures. The top 21 brochures were then judged by a team from the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter. The topic for this year's contest was The Declaration of Independence.
The three winning students were not aware they were the top students for the brochure contest until the awards were announced and each student called forward to receive their award. Willard Middle School principal Dr. Michell Campiglia joined in congratulating the students. The presentation ceremony included Daniel Graham, Supervisor, Social Science and Global Studies, Department of Teaching and Learning for Loudoun County Public Schools; Willard Middle School social science teachers Benjamin Bishop, Genna Mills, Emily Davis, Daniel Adams and Charles Hansen.
