Restaurant Review: China King
Patch Editor Leah Kosin visited the 30-year-old restaurant to find out what all the talk was about.
After living in Leesburg for almost four years I can finally say that I've eaten at . Owner Waily Whang invited me into her family business on Friday, April 20.
The fact that's its located in historic downtown already makes it a special place. It was established in 1972 and the Whang family has served community residents and local businesses since 1989.
Upon entering, I was instantly invited to take a seat. The menu was simple, yet full of options. I ordered the General Tso Chicken along with a cup of egg drop soup, fried rice, and a vegetable spring roll.

Literally, within two minutes, my soup had been served. I'm sometimes skeptical when it comes to egg drop soup because I can't stand the taste, or feel, of runny eggs.
Whenever I've ordered this soup in the past, I've experienced clumps that make me shudder. I've also experienced it without any taste. Very plain, no color. However, the egg drop soup at China King was given my full approval. My only complaint is that is was too hot to taste within the first few minutes. The good news is it tasted fresh and I had no problem making it dissapear.

About six minutes later, the main course was served. I thought the presentation was so nice that I snapped a picture with my iPhone and sent it to my husband, also an avid fan of Chinese food. He was jealous.
The General Tso Chicken was huge! I don't think I've ever seen a chunk of chicken so big. There were eight pieces on my plate. I left two.
I was pleased to see that there was a generous amount of General Tso sauce. I know it's probably not the healthiest thing but I enjoyed having a little extra. It kept the chicken flavorful and was a nice addition to my spring roll and rice, which were also very delicious.
Only once during my meal was I asked how everything was. In my opinion, that's a good thing. I don't like it when I'm constantly being interuppted during a meal. Other than that, the table remained clear of dirty dishes at all times. My drink remained full and I was happy with my experience.
Before I left, I was given beef and brocolli along with chicken lo mein to take home. Unfortunately, I lost some of the sauce due to the bag tipping over in the car. Woops. As a result the beef seemed a little dry.
As for the lo mein...it was good but tasted better once I added some soy sauce.
Overall, my experience at China King was a positive one. I will definitely be back in the near future. What I enjoy most is the fact that family is so friendly and willing to get to know their customers.
Each week, China King shares photographs of their guests on Facebook, which I think is a fun idea. I can tell you that they made me feel very comfortable I look forward to a continued friendship.
