Coronavirus Help: Purcellville Suspends Meals Tax For Restaurants

The Purcellville Town Council suspended collection of the 5-percent meals tax in April and May due to the coronavirus.

PURCELLVILLE, VA — The Purcellville Town Council directed the town to suspend its collection of the 5-percent meals tax for the months of April and May. The meals tax holiday means that customers of food establishments will not have to pay the 5-percent tax assessed on meals purchased from food establishments inside Purcellville.

The town is encouraging residents to support local food establishments during the new coronavirus, or COVID-19, crisis. Restaurants and other food establishments in Virginia are only allowed to provide carryout, curbside pickup and delivery services under the governor's executive order issued Monday.

"Your business at this critical time will help ensure that the restaurants that we have enjoyed for years will be able to survive this crisis and return to a strong financial position following the termination of the COVID-19 threat," the town said Thursday in a statement.

Purcellville also is developing an online directory of restaurants, breweries, ice cream shops and other businesses in western Loudoun County that have created ways to continue serving the community during the coronavirus crisis. The town will make the directory available on its website.

Businesses will need to fill out an online application or contact Amie Ware at aware@purcellvilleva.gov to be included in the directory.

On Monday, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam issued an order requiring all restaurants and bars to close their dining areas. However, these establishments may continue to offer delivery and takeout services.
