How to Save Electricity in Your Home

It's easy to save electricity in your Leesburg, VA home with these tips.

It's fairly easy to save energy at home, which is good for both your checkbook and the planet. Here are a few easy tips to reign in energy use:

  • Convert to compact fluorescent lighting (CFLs) in your light fixtures wherever possible. They use 75 percent less energy and can last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
  • Try LED lamps and holiday lights instead of traditional incandescent ones. They shine bright, last longer and, again, burn much less electricity.
  • Don't forget about "energy vampires." Appliances like TVs, computers, printers, smartphones and their chargers suck electricity if they are plugged in, even if the power switch is off. Get power strips and use these to plug in your electronics. Just switch off the power strip anytime you leave the house, go on vacation or plan to be away for an extended period of time.
  • Be mindful about laundry. Wash only full loads of clothing (but do not overload the drum) and use cold water most of the time.
  • Opt for appliances with the Energy Star label which means they are more efficient.
  • Don't go crazy with the A/C or heat. Keep the thermostat set no lower than 78 F in the summer and no higher than 68 in the winter. Ceiling fans are a good alternative to running the air in the summer.
