Inova Loudoun Hospital Offering Educational Events
in Observance of Trauma Awareness Month (May)

In observance of Trauma Awareness Month, the Inova Virts Miller Family Emergency and Trauma Center at Loudoun Hospital is offering a Stop the Bleed™ workshop and a Distracted Driving mini-event. Both events will be held at Inova Loudoun Hospital on the main campus in Leesburg. Additionally, Inova Loudoun is co-hosting a community blood drive with Loudoun EMS and Inova Blood Donor Services.
The public is encouraged to attend the Stop the Bleed™ workshop on Tuesday, May 7 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at Inova Loudoun Hospital, 44055 Riverside Parkway, Physician's Office Building (South Entrance), Leesburg. During an emergency, no matter how quickly emergency professionals respond, the individuals on-scene are best positioned to assist and potentially stop life-threatening blood loss. This is critical because a person who is bleeding profusely can die from blood loss within five minutes. This is designed for non-clinical citizens who may find themselves at the scene of an emergency. Attendees will have enhanced their emergency preparedness by learning the difference between bleeding and life-threatening blood loss, and how to react to both. The Stop the Bleed™ workshop includes a visual presentation and hands-on practice with tourniquets and wound packing. Practicing these skills gives the learner a deeper understanding of what it means to Stop the Bleed™, and the confidence that they can help someone in an emergency. The Inova Virts Miller Family Emergency and Trauma Center at Loudoun Hospital is part of the national Stop the Bleed™ campaign. Seating is limited so advance registration is encouraged. To register visit www.Inova.org/StoptheBleed.
Drop in any time on Tuesday, May 21 between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Inova Loudoun Hospital, 44045 Riverside Parkway, Atrium (South Entrance), Leesburg for the Distracted Driving mini-event. Attendees will learn more about distracted driving and the impacts it has on our roads. Participants will have the opportunity to play a variety of games that aim to educate drivers on what is distracted driving and how easy it is to take our eyes and attention off the road. Three activities will be available:

- Fatal Vision Drowsy and Distracted Goggles: using a portable steering wheel and walking along a course, these goggles simulate a blackout while texting or taking your eyes off the road.
- Distract-A-Match: simple shape and color matching game to demonstrate the cognitive and visual demands of driving. During the game participants will be distracted with a cell phone to see how well they do.
- Distracted Driving Activity Mat: use a map with small car to navigate through a simulated town, making stops and obeying traffic signs. Attendees will then be distracted with a cell phone or by questions to demonstrate how distractions can take away from your ability to safely drive.
In support of the Field Available Component Transfusion Response Program (FACT*R), a community blood drive will be held on Sunday, May 12 from 7 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Purcellville Volunteer Fire Company, 500 N. Maple Avenue, Purcellville. Hemorrhage is the number one cause of death from trauma. For the first time, lifesaving blood products are being taken out of a hospital trauma center and transported to entrapped patients at the scene of an accident. Initiated by Loudoun and Fairfax County EMS and Inova, the FACT*R program allows trained paramedics to transport and administer blood products in the field. You can make a difference by donating blood on May 12. To schedule a lifesaving appointment, visit inova.org/LoudounFACTR.
