WATERFORD, VA — The Kuhn family, who owns JK Moving Services, has purchased the historic 400-acre Oakland Farm from the Catholic Diocese of Arlington.

In a news release, the Kuhns said they plan to place the land into a conservation easement to protect it from development. They also noted plans to use part of the land for farming to support the JK Community Farm.

Oakland Farm was built in 1759 by Joseph McGeath. The site hosted the earliest recorded Catholic Mass in Loudoun County's history, according to a news release announcing the purchase.

“This land is incredibly beautiful and has a rich history. Buying it furthers our commitment to help preserve Virginia’s natural habitats, ecosystems and history,” Chuck Kuhn, owner of JK Moving Services and JK Land Holdings, said. "We also plan to raise cattle and grow crops on this land to support JK Community Farm’s work to ensure neighbors struggling with food insecurity have healthy food to eat."

JK Community Farm is a 150-acre working farm that provides food for individuals in need. The farm, which is chemical-free, has two staff members and is primarily by volunteers. Food produced by the farm is distributed to partnering food pantries for distribution.

Oakland Farm was previously recognized by the U.S. Departmen of Agriculture as a "Bicentennial Farm," a recognition bestowed on properties that have been owned by the same family for 200 or more years.

The Kuhns said their purchase of the property and plans to protect its history will uphold the wishes of the Brown family, who are direct descendents of Oakland Farm's original owner Joseph McGeath.

The purchase of Oakland Farm is the Kuhns family's latest effort to protect natural land and historic areas in Loudoun County. The family has previously worked to purchase and preserve Wolver Hill Farm in Middleburg, the Middleburg Training Center, 90 acres that used to hold the Middleburg Academy, and Historic White's Ferry in Maryland.
