LCSO Locates Child in 2006 Family Abduction Case

A child in a 2006 family abduction case was located this week living in a Sterling, Virginia residence after a tip about her possible whereabouts was received by law enforcement officials.

The 6-year-old child was reported missing by her father in February of 2006 from their home in Los Angeles, CA. It was suspected that her mother had taken the child and left the country. At the time, they were believed to be in a stolen silver 2004 Dodge Neon that was never recovered.

Earlier this month the Los Angeles Police Department received a tip though the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children website (www.missingkids.com) that the child was possibly living in the Sterling area. Detectives with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division were contacted and were able to identify and locate the child and her mother at a residence on West Nettle Tree Road.

The mother, Maria E. Cano, 39, was taken into custody on April 16th and is being held without bond as a fugitive from justice. She is wanted in California for child concealment and multiple counts of grand theft. She is awaiting extradition at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

The child, who is now 12-years-old, is in the process of being returned to her father.
