Mark Tooley will take the Loudoun County Civil War Roundtable through the events of the 1861 Peace Conference, which was the last major effort to avert the Civil War. He recently wrote "The Peace That Almost Was," a book about this fascinating story.

Mark Tooley is president of the Institute on Religion and Democracy (IRD) and editor of IRD’s foreign policy and national security journal, Providence. Before joining the IRD in 1994, Tooley worked eight years for the Central Intelligence Agency. He is a graduate of Georgetown University and a native of Arlington, Virginia.
