Leesburg Designer's Pina Creations in DC Spotlight

An exhibit on the Philippines showcases Leesburg-based bridal designer Cathy Ebrada this week. 

Six of Ebrada's bridal and formal wear designs will be on display at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. showing off her traditional and intricate work.  Ebrada uses pina fabric from the Philippines which is made from pineapple leaves, as well as hand-beaded pearls.

The traditional art form from the Philippines of creating fabric from pineapple leaves is not common today, but Cathy Ebrada has kept this traditional fabric alive with her creations.

“I’m inspired by working with the pina fabric because I love the feel of it.  It is so soft, but very flowy with so many possibilities,” Ebrada said.

Ebrada describes herself as a modern, but conservative clothes designer and she enjoys taking a traditional fabric and using it in a modern way.

Creating one of a kind pieces by hand, Ebrada’s pieces are made with different accessories including belts, ribbons, different flowers and beading. 

The designer has been based in Leesburg for the past seven years.  Originally from the Phillipines, she left behind “everything” and moved to New York to attend Parsons School of Design.  Her career then landed her a job working for high-profile stylists, such as Patricia Field of 'Sex in the City' fame. 

With her own shop and designs to create, Ebrada Atelier is today a working designer shop.  “I design, cut and sew custom pieces working with the client directly by appointment,” Ebrada said.

The shop features other designers as well.  Ebrada enjoys collaborating with her clients  to create something unique and customized for their special day.  She said business has been great and consistent for months.

The pina fabric is made in the Phillipines from fibers of the pineapple fruit, through a tedious process.  Weavers generally make only several yards a day, Ebrada said.

“I want to support this cottage industry and women who are close to my heart,” Ebrada added.
