Leesburg Health Inspections: Plaza Azteca, MacDowell Brew Kitchen

The Loudoun County Health Department recorded violations at several facilities around the Leesburg area during recent inspections.

LEESBURG, VA — The Loudoun County Health Department recorded violations at several facilities around Leesburg during inspections between Aug. 10 and Aug. 17.

Most COVID-19 restrictions around the state have relaxed, so health inspectors are returning to conduct some restaurant inspections in person. However, some visits, such as those for training purposes, can be conducted virtually.

Violations at restaurants typically focus on factors that can contribute to food contamination. The local health department can also perform a re-inspection to ensure that possible violations have been corrected.

For every observed violation, the inspector provides a specific corrective action that can be completed to rectify the violation. Sometimes these are simple, and violations can be corrected during the course of the inspection.

  • Loudoun Golf & Country Club, 36967 West Main St Purcellville, VA 20132
    • Date inspected: Aug. 10
    • Total violations: 2
      • Observed raw chicken stored over raw beef in prep unit.
      • Observed marinara sauce hot holding at improper temperature (112F) in steam table.
  • Comfort Suites Breakfast Bar, 80 Prosperity Ave Leesburg, VA 20175
    • Date inspected: Aug. 11
    • Total violations: 4
      • At time of inspection, there was no person in charge who could describe how to wash, rinse and sanitize wares. Employees were unable to locate 3 compartment sink drain plugs. Employees also had no working dispenser for the sanitizer and could not provide test strips to measure concentration on chemical sanitizer (Quaternary Ammonium). Employees could not tell EHS how they sanitize wares with a broken dispenser.
      • Observed ant, roach, and spider spray killer in the kitchen next to storage of clean equipment and dry goods.
      • Observed gasket on 2 door fridge torn. Gasket is no longer tight-fitting to the door. Also observed the dispenser for the 3 compartment sink sanitizer broken.
      • Observed test kit used to measure sanitizer (Quaternary Ammonium) that expired in 2018.
  • MacDowell Brew Kitchen, 202-B Harrison St Se Leesburg, VA 20175
    • Date inspected: Aug. 11
    • Total violations: 6
      • Raw wood floor was observed in back bar which is also open to the outdoors. Raw wood walls were also observed in this area. There is a hole in the wall behind the ice machine large enough to allow small animals into the area. Fiberglass insulation was observed exposed in ceiling by chest freezers and by soda syrup rack.
      • Two bags of red onions were observed stored on kitchen floor. Onions can become contaminated on floor with fluids.
      • Chef could not find or provide a food temperature measuring devise for monitoring the internal temperature of foods while cooking, hot holding, cold holding, and re-heating.
      • Queso was observed hot holding at 125 F on the steam table. Hold holding of foods needs to be at least 135 F.
      • The person in charge could not provide information in a verifiable means showing that all food staff are properly trained to report signs and symptoms of illness along with the reporting of the big 6 foodborne illness.
      • No supervisors or managers are certified food protection managers. The Chef has an expired certificate.
  • Lansdowne Golf Clubhouse, 44050 Woodridge Parkway Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Aug. 11
    • Total violations: 4
      • In use knife was observed stored with the blade down between prep cooler and table. The side of the prep cooler and table are not clean and sanitary so blade of knife has become contaminated with filth.
      • The internal food items located in the walk-in cooler were observed with temperatures of 48 F to 50 F while stored in cooler. The foods located in coolers need to be maintained at or below 41 F.
      • Employee was observed handling dirty utensils then proceeded to put clean food utensils away without washing hands.
      • Staff is not properly trained to monitor food temperatures. Staff is not monitoring cold holding food temperatures.
  • Lansdowne Main Kitchen, 44050 Woodridge Parkway Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Aug. 11
    • Total violations: 3
      • Hot water at hand sink by the dish machine was observed with no flow. Need hot water to wash hands.
      • Floor drains are very slow to drain. Waste water was observed in several floor drains. There is a concern that the waste water will back up into the restaurant kitchen creating a unsanitary conditions. The waste water could be kicked up and splashed onto food contact surfaces.
      • Steam was observed rolling out of the high temperature dish machine creating condensation on ceiling. The condensation can drip unsanitary water onto food and food contact surfaces. Mold was also observed on the ceiling grid and tiles. The mold spores will blow onto food and food contact surfaces.
  • Plaza Azteca, 1608 Village Market Blvd #125 Leesburg, VA 20175
    • Date inspected: Aug. 12
    • Total violations: 7
      • Observed food employee with bare hand place a lime on the rim of beer glass.
      • Observed no soap at kitchen and prep area hand sinks.
      • Observed no paper towels at kitchen and prep area hand sinks.
      • The 3-compartment quaternary sanitizer tested at 100 ppm.
      • Observed the use of grocery bags on the cook line to store unwrapped tortillas.
      • Observed ice machine guard with a build up of dirt and debris.
      • Observed 3 out of 4 light bulbs over the grill area not working in the hood.
  • Starbucks Coffee, 500 Compass Point Plaza SE Leesburg, VA 20175
    • Date inspected: Aug. 15
    • Total violations: 3
      • Manager could not provide documentation that employees have been informed of their responsibility to report health illnesses as they relate to diseases that are transmissible through food.
      • All sinks observe in need of detailed cleaning.
      • Wet mops observed stored directly on floor next to mop sink.
  • Velocity Wings, 20 Town Square #100 Lovettsville, VA 20180
    • Date inspected: Aug. 15
    • Total violations: 1
      • Observed hot water nozzle on only handwashing sink in the kitchen broken. Nozzle is not capable of turning off the hot water. Hot water now has a continuous flow.
  • Dunkin Donuts, 308 Kelly's Ford Plaza #100 Leesburg, VA 20175
    • Date inspected: Aug. 16
    • Total violations: 1
      • Observed several in-use utensils stored in standing, cloudy room temperature water.
  • Oasis Dippin Dot @ Symington, 80 Ida Lee Dr Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Aug. 16
    • Total violations: 1
      • Waste water tank is not 15% greater than clean water tank.
