Leesburg Health Inspections: Wei's Garden, Jersey Mike's

The Loudoun County Health Department recorded violations at several facilities around western Loudoun County during recent inspections.

LEESBURG, VA — Several restaurants around Leesburg and western Loudoun County recorded violations during recent inspections from the health department. Inspectors conducted the most recent restaurant visits between March 8 and March 14.

Most COVID-19 restrictions around the state have relaxed, so health inspectors are returning to conduct some restaurant inspections in person. However, some visits, such as those for training purposes, can be conducted virtually.

Violations at restaurants typically focus on factors that can contribute to food contamination. The local health department can also perform a re-inspection to ensure that possible violations have been corrected.

For every observed violation, the inspector provides a specific corrective action that can be completed to rectify the violation. Sometimes these are simple, and violations can be corrected during the course of the inspection.

  • Purcellville Pub(The), 745 E Main St Purcellville, VA 20132
    • Date inspected: March 15
    • Total violations: 3
      • Observed raw shell eggs stored above ready-to-eat foods (portioned lunch meats). Store raw animal proteins below and separate from ready-to-eat foods. Corrected at inspection by rearranging raw shell eggs below said ready-to-eat foods.
      • Chicken wings are partially cooked. Documentation (approved by health department is required when this procedure (non-continuous cooking) is being done. Environmental Health Specialist will provide said documentation.
      • Observed: Cheese Beer soup and Pub rice cold holding temperatures above 41F. Time/Temperature control for safety foods need to be 41F or below to prevent bacterial growth. Person in charge discarded said foods. Corrected at inspection.
  • Stoneleigh Golf Club, 35271 Prestwick Ct Round Hill, VA 20141
    • Date inspected: March 16
    • Total violations: 1
      • Observed single service items stored on the ground in outdoor storage unit. Single service items shall be stored at least 6 inches off the ground.
  • Tropical Cafe Smoothie, 506 E. Market St, Unit A Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: March 17
    • Total violations: 3
      • Observed scrubber brush in hand sink. Hand sinks should be available for employees at all times.
      • Observed improper cold holding temperature of kale 45F in prep cooler 3. Foods held cold should be maintained at 41F or below.
      • Observed the handle of ice scoop touching ice. The ice scoop should have the handle above the top of the food and the container.
  • Little Caesars, 703 E Market St Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: March 20
    • Total violations: 1
      • Observed no verifiable manner that food employees have been trained, to report to the person in charge, information about their health and activities as it relates to diseases that are transmissible through food. Person in charge (PIC) could only provide one signed employee health policy for an employee who was not working. Verification could not be shown for current working employees.
  • MOCHINUT, 1604 Village Market Blvd Leesburg, VA 20175
    • Date inspected: March 20
    • Total violations: 3
      • Observed ground black sesame in plastic containers in freezer and person in charge could not verify the vender where the ground black sesame was purchased. Food served to the public needs to come from an approved food source.
      • Observed tapioca 131F for bubble tea at an improper hot holding temperature. Foods held hot should be maintain at 135F or above.
      • Observed in use utensils in water of 66F. In use utensils in a container of water if the water is maintained at a temperature of at least 135°F and the container is cleaned every 4 hours or as needed.
  • Jersey Mike's Subs, 150 B Purcellville Gateway Dr Purcellville, VA 20132
    • Date inspected: March 20
    • Total violations: 5
      • Observed: Sliced tomatoes in cold holding unit on prep line were 46F. Proper cold holding temperature is 41F or below. Person in charge returned tomatoes to walk-in refrigerator and replaced with tomatoes that were at an acceptable temperature (41F).
      • Chicken salad (large container) in walk-in refrigerator did not have a date mark to indicate the day it should be discarded. Date mark the container of chicken salad, which is held for more than 24 hours in the food establishment to indicate the day or date by which the food shall be served or sold. The RTE TCS food may be held for a maximum of 7 days with the day of preparation counted as day 1.
      • Working containers of toxic materials (cleaning supplies) are not properly labeled with a common name. Properly label toxic (cleaning materials) materials.
      • The can opener receptacle is need of deep cleaning. The can opener and receptacle has corrosion forming. Maintain can opener receptacle and environs clean to sight and touch.
      • The walk-in floor, corners especially had accumulation of debris. Maintain walk-in floor clean to sight and touch.
  • Wei's Garden, 161 Fort Evans Rd NE #110 Leesburg, VA 20176-4420
    • Date inspected: March 21
    • Total violations: 5
      • The hand washing sink by the cook line is blocked with a pan sitting in the sink. The hot water was shut off at the hand sink so there was only cold water under pressure at the hand sink.
      • Slicer was observed with old, dried food residue on the blade. The microwave oven was observed with old food residue on the interior and exterior of unit.
      • Cooked shrimp and baby corn were observed stored in the walk-in cooler without any date markings. Ready to eat foods prepared on site or from an opened commercial container must be labeled with a use by date not to exceed 7 days counting day of prep as day one.
      • Hot water under pressure is not provided as required to the hand sink and warewashing sink. Hot water must be available for cleaning at all times.
      • Facility has an accumulation of old cardboard, unused equipment, and other debris throughout the facility. Unused and old cardboard, papers, and equipment can create fire hazard and insect harborage areas.
  • Kovi Asian Street Food, 1015 Edwards Ferry Rd NE Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: March 21
    • Total violations: 4
      • Observed: Employee hand sink is not accessible due to deep stainless pan filled with liquid sitting inside the sink. Employee hand sinks need to be easily accessible at all time. Employee unblocked the employee hand sink by removing the stainless pan. Corrected at inspection.
      • Observed: Condiments at prep table, that are used beyond 24 hours, do not have date marks. Date mark commercially processed RTE time/temperature control for safety (TCS) foods at the time the original container is opened if the food is to be held for more than 24 hours in the food establishment to indicate the day or date by which the food shall be served or sold. The RTE TCS food may be held for a maximum of 7 days with the day of the container is opened counted as day 1.
      • Observed: There is no asterisk (*) on the items on the menu board that are offered undercooked ( Kovi ultimate, maui waui, poke bowl offerings) to coordinate with the asterisk next to the disclosure on the bottom of the menu board. The Consumer Advisory shall include a reminder statement that includes asterisking (*) the animal-derived foods requiring disclosure to a footnote that states: "Consuming raw or undercooked meats, seafood, shellfish, or eggs may increase your risk of foodborne illness, Environmental Health Specialist discussed these requirements with Person in Charge.
      • Observed: Floors and underneath equipment have an accumulation of food debris. Maintain these areas clean to sight and touch with regular cleaning.
