Local SAR Chapter at 250th Anniversary of 1st Continental Congress
Commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the 1st Continenental Congress was held at Carpenters Hall Philadelphia, site of the 1774 Congress
On 13 October, 2024 the Philadelphia Chapter Pennsylvania Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) sponsored the 250th Commemoration of the First Continental Congress at Carpenters Hall, where the Congress met between September 5 and October 26, 1774. Carpenters Hall was opened to attendees for tours.
National Society SAR Historian General Jeffery D. Thomas, gave remarks summarizing the achievements of Congress and some of the men involved. Virginia Delegates to the Congress were: Richard Bland, Benjamin Harrison, Patrick Henry, Richard Henry Lee, Edmund Pendelton, Peyton Randolph and George Washington. Edmund Pendleton was elected President of the Congress.
The principle outcome of the Congress was the passage of the Continental Association. They also adopted the Suffolk Resolves, a measure from counties in Massachusetts declaring grievances against the Crown, a boycott of English goods, and a request that each Colony establish and train a militia.
Representing the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter of Loudoun County was Ken Bonner. Mr. Bonner is the immediate past President of the Chapter and the 3rd Vice President of the Virginia Society SAR.
