Local SAR Chapter at Lafayette arrival in Yorktown

On Friday, October 18, a re-enactment of Major General Lafayette's arrival at Yorktown in October 1824 was celebrated at the Yorktown waterfront. The General was delivered to Yorktown by the tall masted sailing ship Luna. A large crowd gathered to witness the event.

A Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard composed of Virginia and other state members advanced colors to open a ceremony honoring General Lafayette's arrival. The General was portrayed by Mark Schneider. He gave a talk about his admiration for the United States and the friends he made while fighting in the American Revolution.

After the General's remarks, a Sons of the American Revolution squad formed on the walk near the break water and execute a thirteen shot flintlock volley honor salute to Major General Lafayette. The salute was executed by each squad member firing a round, then the next member, then the next, until thirteen shots were fired.

Friday evening, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown was the scene for a reception and dinner honoring Major General Lafayette. The General gave remarks and thanked the crowd for honoring him.

Loudoun County based Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter VA SAR was represented by Ken Bonner and Barry Schwoerer. Both participated in Color Guard and in the Flintlock volley.
