Local SAR Chapter participates in Yorktown Victory Parade

On October 19, 1781 the British Army in Virginia, Commanded by British General Lord Cornwallis surrendered his Army to George Washington on the battlefield at Yorktown, VA. Saturday, October 19, 2024 witnessed a celebration of the two-hundred and forty-third anniversary of the event that gave the United States independence from Great Britain. Patriotic organizations from across the United States formed a parade with 36 units marching. The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) marched in the parade with members representing several states and multiple members from Virginia. The Loudoun County based Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter was represented by Ken Bonner and Barry Schwoerer. The parade marched down Main Street, ending at the Victory Monument just West of the historic district of Yorktown.

Just before the parade, the SAR sponsored a commemoration of General Thomas Nelson Jr., Governor of Virginia during the siege of Yorktown, and Commander-in-chief of the Virginia Militia. Sixty-seven wreaths were presented in honor of General Thomas Nelson Jr. They represented multiple Patriotic Societies, including the President General of National SAR, National President of Children of the American Revolution, President General Daughters of the American Revolution, and many others. Honoring Governor Nelson for the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter of Loudoun County were Ken Bonner and Barry Schwoerer. Both men participated in Color Guard. Barry Schwoerer presented the Chapter wreath.
