Local SAR Chapter places wreaths for Wreaths Across America (WAA)

On 15 December the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter sponsored placement of wreaths for Wreaths Across America at three cemeteries: Old Potts Graveyard near Hillsboro, McIlhaney Family Cemetery near Hillsboro, and Nixon Family cemetery south of Leesburg. They were joined by Paul Christensen from the Colonel James Wood II chapter near Winchester and by Paula Schwoerer, Elizabeth McIntosh Hammill Chapter VA DAR. Mrs. Schwoerer is a descendant of David Potts, founder of the Old Potts Graveyard and she is a descendant of multiple individuals buried there, including Patriot John Conard.

A short opening ceremony was held for all cemeteries. The team presented the flag of the United States and cited the Pledge of Allegiance. Wreaths were laid at eight Patriot burials and one Veteran of the War of 1812. A three shot musket volley was held to close the ceremony.

Honored at the Old Potts Graveyard were: John Campbell, John Conard, Peter Gideon, Ezekiel Potts, Nathan Potts, Samuel Pursel, Thomas Purcell, David Williams, and War of 1812 Veteran Nathan Neer.

Honored at the McIlhaney Family cemetery were: James McIlhaney and William H. Parker.

Honored at the Nixon Family Cemetery were: George Nixon Sr., George Nixon Jr., and John Nixon.
