Local SAR Participates in Commemoration of Revolutionary War Grayson Brothers

On Sunday, March 15 a large group assembled at the Grayson Family tomb off of Longview Drive in Woodbridge, VA to honor Revolutionary War patriots William and Spence Grayson. The tomb is located on property originally owned by the Grayson brother's father.

Spence Grayson served as a chaplain for the Continental Army. William Grayson served as Aide-de-camp to General George Washington, commanded a Battalion in several early Revolutionary War battles, and raised a company of men in Prince William and surrounding counties. After the Revolution he returned to his occupation as a lawyer with an office in Dumfries, VA. He was deeply involved in debate leading to the Constitution which he did not endorse because it did not contain individual rights of citizens. He was elected the first Virginia Senator under the new Constituition. He died after his first year in office.

The event was attended by National Society Sons of the American Revolution President General Michael Elston and Virginia Society President Darrin Schmidt. Representing the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter from Loudoun County were Ken Bonner and Chapter President Barry Schwoerer. Schwoerer carried the SAR 250 flag in the advance and presentation of colors. Bonner presented a wreath on behalf of the International Society Sons of the American Revolution and Schwoerer presented a wreath for the Sgt Major John Champe Chapter.
