Loudoun Sheriff's Office Honors County's Crossing Guards

A group of part-time crossing guards work at 52 posts across Loudoun County and in the town of Leesburg.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office honored school crossing guards Wednesday, the day designated as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Virginia. Each year, the statewide event is devoted to thanking the people who help students cross the street safely on their way to and from school.

Loudoun County's crossing guard team is composed of two full-time program supervisors and a group of part-time crossing guards who provide services at 52 posts across the county and in the Town of Leesburg.

"We would like to send out a special note of appreciation to our crossing guards," the sheriff's office said in a tweet. "Thank you for helping Loudoun students cross the streets safely on their way to and from school."

The sheriff's office also recognized Dina Perry, who won an award in 2019 for most outstanding crossing guard. Perry, who works at Belmont Station Elementary, takes the time to learn everyone's names, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation, which oversees the contest.

"They have learned so much about safety when crossing streets on foot or on bike. No matter if it’s rain or shine," VDOT said of Perry, "she brightens our day."

The sheriff's office also said it is seeking applicants for part-time crossing guard positions. Crossing Guards are are tasked with directing traffic and ensuring safety of children arriving and leaving schools daily.
