Police Department Receives IACP Community Policing Award

Leesburg recognized for establishing partnerships with businesses to promote crime prevention measures.

Release, Leesburg Police Department:

The Leesburg Police Department is proud to announce that we have been awarded the 2014 Community Policing Award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and Cisco Systems. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding community policing initiatives by law enforcement agencies worldwide. Law Enforcement agencies were eligible to be nominated in five categories based on population size. The Leesburg Police Department was one of five agencies selected and we are honored to share the award with the Madison County, Alabama Police Department for agencies with populations of 20,001 – 50,000.

The Leesburg Police Department received the award based upon the partnerships we have established with businesses within the Town of Leesburg to combat Organized Retail Crime (ORC) through the use of crime prevention measures. The ORC initiative is an example of this mission in practice. Incurring no additional costs, the LPD was able to establish a public-private partnership to enhance traditional analytical practices, apply modern theories on crime prevention, and reverse a significant crime trend.

“This is a tremendous honor for the agency and the Town and it speaks volumes for the work done day in and day out by the outstanding men and women of this agency” stated Leesburg’s Chief of Police Joseph Price.

The 2014 award marks the second time that the Leesburg Police Department has won the IACP Community Policing award, previously winning in 2006.

The Leesburg Police Department will be honored at the International Association of Chiefs of Police 121st Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida at a special awards reception on Sunday, October 26, 2014. Members of the police department will be on hand to accept the award.
