President James Monroe Commemorated in Richmond

James Monroe, 5th President of the United States, had a distinguished career as a public servant and Soldier during the American Revolution. He served in the Virginia Militia, first as a Private, then served additional terms rising to the rank of Colonel. Her was wounded at the Battle of Trenton and wintered with General Washington at Valley Forge. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress and to the Virginia Constitution ratification convention. Under President George Washington he served as Ambassador to France. He served as Governor of Virginia, and Senator to the United States Congress representing Virginia. He negotiated the Louisiana purchase for President Jefferson. He served as both Secretary of State and Secretary of War for President Madison. He then won the presidency in 1816 and ran unopposed for his second term. He was the last President of the United States to have served in the American Revolution.

Fifty-six Patriotic organizations assembled at President Monroe's tomb in Hollywood cemetery in Richmond, VA. Each organization presented a wreath honoring our 5th President and Patriot of the American Revolution. The President of Virginia SAR, Dr. Michael Weyler and thirteen Virginia SAR Chapters participated. The Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter from Loudoun County was represented by Chapter President Barry Schwoerer.

Daughters of the American Revolution were represented by the Virginia DAR Librarian, two District Directors and fourteen Chapters from across Virginia.
