Revolutionary War Patriot recognized in Frederick County, VA

The Colonel James Wood II Chapter Virginia SAR sponsored the dedication of a Revolutionary War Patriot Grave Marker for Captain Jeremiah Smith. The dedication was conducted on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at the Smith Family Cemetery in Gore, VA. Captain Smith was born in Cape May, NJ in 1711. As a young man he migrated to Virginia and settled west of Winchester on a large plot of land. He served in the Virginia Militia as a Captain and provided material aid to the Revolutionary cause. He died on March 25, 1786 in Frederick County, VA.

Five Virginia SAR Chapters participated: Host and sponsor Colonel James Wood II, Fort Harrison, Colonel William Grayson, Sgt Maj John Champe, and George Mason. The Virginia Society SAR was represented by 3rd Vice President Randy Atkins. Daughters of the American Revolution was represented by the John Alexander Chapter DAR.

The Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter was represented by President Barry Schwoerer, Vice President Mark Sink, and Compatriot Steve Van Deusen. They participated in Honor Guard and Color Guard, and the musket volley honoring Captain Smith. Compatriot Schwoerer presented the Chapter wreath.

Locating and marking patriot Graves is a primary mission of Sons of the American Revolution. The dedication ceremony is much like a military funeral honoring the person who served in the founding of our nation.
