Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter Awarded a Flag Certificate to The Virginian

On April 15, Avenal Jarka, The Virginian Executive Director, accepted a Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Flag certificate from Sgt Maj John Champe (SMJC) Chapter President Barry Schwoerer. A SAR flag certificate is presented to an organization, or homeowner, who properly displays and maintains the National Flag. Proper display means that the flag must be lighted at night or taken down at sunset and raised at dawn. Proper maintenance means the flag is replaced when it is worn, torn, or soiled.

The Virginian resident, and member of the SMJC Chapter, Peter Rainey, identified the opportunity to recognize The Virginian with a flag certificate. He was present at the short ceremony. After the presentation was complete he read "I Am Old Glory", a poem-like story about different events in our Nation's history where the flag was particularly important to participants. One example is the raising of the flag on Mount Saribachi on Iwo Jima during World War II.
