Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter VA SAR in Brunswick MD Veterans parade

The Sergeant Major John Champe Chapter, VA SAR honored veterans by participating in the Brunswick, MD Veterans parade with four members, three guests and a float designed, decorated and owned by member Warner Workman. Chapter members were Kenneth Bonner, Barry Schwoerer, Mark Sink and float designer, owner and driver, Warner Workman. Guest SAR members were Richard Rankin of the George Washington Chapter VA SAR and Paul Christensen from the Colonel James Wood II Chapter VA SAR. Mr. Christensen's spouse rode the float. The team handed out candy and patriotic rubber ducks.

This was the first time a reproduction Guidon of Revolutionary War unit the "U.S. Light Dragoons" was displayed and flown. The Guidon was used by the unit commanded by Light Horse Harry Lee, Commanding Officer of Sgt Maj John Champe who was the senior enlisted man in Lee's unit and the soldier nominated by Lee to fake desertion to infiltrate British lines to capture the traitor Benedict Arnold. The original Guidon is held by the archives at Stratford Hall, the Lee Family seat, in Westmoreland County. It is in very poor repair and not displayed to the public. SMJC Chapter member Kurtis Schwoerer used a picture of the original to create a high resolution image used to create the reproduction.
