Sgt Maj John Champe SAR presents Flag certificates

Richard Ryan of Ashburn was presented two certificates this afternoon for proper display and retirement of the Flag of the United States. The presentation was made by Barry Schwoerer, President of the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter, Virginia SAR.

The first certificate reads: "The Certificate of Commendation is presented to Richard Ryan In recognition of Exemplary Patriotism in the Display of the Flag of the United States of America". To receive the Certificate one must illuminate the flag if flown at night, take the flag down during inclement weather unless the flag is made of weather resistant material, and replace the flag when worn, torn, or soiled.

The second certificate reads: "The Certificate of Commendation is presented to Richard Ryan In recognition of service to the community for proper retirement of unserviceable United States Flags". Mr. Ryan was awarded the certificate for collecting unserviceable United States Flags from neighbors and businesses then delivering them to the Sgt Maj John Champe Flag Retirement Chairman for transport to a formal Flag Retirement Ceremony held on June 14, 2023. He collected two very large bags of flags estimated to contain over 40 flags in each bag.

Mr. Ryan is a member (Compatriot) of the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter, Virginia SAR and a member of Leonard W. Kidd Memorial American Legion Post 2001 in Ashburn, VA.
