Sons of the American Revolution welcome Veterans at Dulles Airport

A combined Virginia SAR Color Guard honored 115 Veterans arriving at Dulles International Airport Saturday morning October 23, 2024. The team welcomed eight (8) veterans of the Korean War, and one-hundred and seven (107) veterans of Vietnam. One female Veteran was in the group. There were twelve (12) United States Air Force Veterans, Sixty-seven (67) United States Army Veterans, ten (1) United States Marine Corps Veterans, and twenty-six (26) Navy Veterans.

The Honor Flight program is a no-cost to Veterans event. Veterans are transported from their local area to the National Capital where they are treated to a tour of monuments honoring veterans of various wars. They are accompanied by a Guardian. Each bus has one or more persons qualified as medical care givers in the event a Veteran has a medical emergency. Honor Flights are greeted by a band playing the National Anthem, hymns of the services, and Patriotic music. Volunteers prepare for arrival with wheel chairs for disabled veterans. Multiple organizations greet the veterans with signs, cheers and good wishes. Color Guards from many police, fire and the Sons of the Revolution present colors (Flags) as Veterans pass as they go to buses waiting outside the terminal. After all veterans have gone to buses the color Guards move outside. As the motorcyle escorts and buses pass, the color Guards present colors honoring the Veterans.

Representing the Loudoun County based Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter Virginia SAR were Barry Schwoerer and Mark Sink. Other SAR members included: Paul Christensen, Allen Phillips, Richard Tyler, and Chip Daniel from the Col. James Wood II Chapter. Jim Cordes represented the Fairfax Resolves Chapter
