Students Plant Red Maples at Harper Park Middle School

Members of the Ecology Club, along with the Leesburg Tree Commission, participated in a tree planting ceremony last Friday, in honor of Arbor day.

A tree planting ceremony took place at on Friday, April 27 in commemoration of Arbor Day.

The Leesburg Tree Commission joined members of the Harper Park Ecology Club to plant two Red Maples, on the right hand side of the school.

“We’re here to raise the awareness of our tree canopy in town and to impress upon these young minds of the importance of trees,” said Tree Commissioner Dale Goodson.

Trees are important for many reasons, he said, including oxidation and erosion control. Tree canopies also reduce the heating and cooling loads on the surrounding buildings.

Last week’s planting ceremony was the first of its kind at the middle school. Goodson said he hopes each student will get to experience their growth while being reminded of their importance. The event was sponsored by Life Sciences Teacher Helen de Groot.
