Spring Arbor to Increase Bed Count

The Town Council unanimously approved 10 more beds Tuesday night, which will allow more occupancy at the senior home.

The Town Council unanimously approved an ordinance Tuesday night to allow an increase in the number of beds at Spring Arbor, 237 Fairview St., N.W., in Leesburg.

Currently, there are 87 beds in the assisted living residence. The change will allow for 10 additional beds to become available, which will allow for more senior citizens to move in.

Spokesman Bo Cook said several rooms in the building sit empty due to double occupancy in other rooms.

“It’s very odd that we have as many couples as we do,” Cook said. “It’s a good thing but we didn’t anticipate it.”

Due to the growing population of Loudoun County, Cook said there are a number of people who have expressed interest in the available space.

Among them is Leesburg resident Pattie Covert and her sister Kathleen Greenough whose father, Harold, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s six years ago.

He is now living at the Village of Laurel Run, which is almost 80 miles away in Pennsylvania. His daughters have been waiting for a bed at Spring Arbor for about four months, they said.

“We’re anxious to get him in there. It’s really frustrating to see the empty rooms and knowing that he could be filling one of them,” Greenough said, adding that it’s hard to find a facility that’s good quality, nearby and affordable.

“It’s actually cheaper than where he is now, which is really not a very nice facility," Greenough said. "We’re really looking forward to having him nearby in a place that will be a great environment for the kids to visit him.”

According to senior planner Irish Grandfield, the approved changes will be internal to the building. No new construction or site development is required.
