Willard Middle School Students Win SAR Brochure Contest

For the second year, Willard Middle School participated in the Sgt Moses Adams Memorial Middle School Brochure Contest sponsored by the National Society Sons of the American Revolution. Students produced tri-fold brochures on one of the Nation's Five Foundational Documents. The documents are: Articles of Confederation, Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Federalist Papers, and Bill of Rights.

Over 135 brochures were submitted to the Sgt Maj John Champe (SMJC) Chapter, Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution. First place went to 8th grade student Lasya Gampa for her brochure on the Articles of Confederation. 2nd place went to 8th grade student Nishka Kayapanda for her brochure on the Declaration of Independence. 3rd place went to 8th grade student Yashasvi Chitturi for her brochure on the Declaration of Independence. Each student was awarded a check and certificate of Accomplishment. The 1st place brochure was sent to the Virginia Society SAR Brochure chairman where it will be judged against brochures from the other 29 chapters in Virginia. The Virginia SAR winning brochure will be sent to National SAR for competition against submissions from all other states.

Willard Middle School Principal Michelle Campigilia, Assistant Principal Kimberly Van Acker, 8th grade dean Annamika Hacikyan, civics teachers Benjamin Bishop, Emily Davis, Gary DeBaldo and Jenna Mills attended the presentation ceremony. The Civics teachers encouraged students to produce brochures with Benjamin Bishop coordinating the effort for the 2024-2025 school year.

Making the presentations were SMJC Chapter President Barry Schwoerer, George Washington Chapter Vice-President Martin Johnson and Mrs. Paula Schwoerer, Elizabeth McIntosh Hammill Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.
