FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Here are five local stories you don't want to miss today in Fairfax County:

1. Indoor Ski Slope Developer In Lorton Launches Stock Offering: Alpine-X, the developer of a new indoor snowsports resort at a closed-off portion of the Fairfax County landfill in Lorton, is holding a stock offering to the general public, an offering that has already attracted more than 75 investors, totaling $120,000, in its first week.

2. McLean Boy Highlights Meal Distributions As Time Kid Reporter: Journalism comes easy to McLean 9-year-old Ethan Zhang. The Churchill Road Elementary fourth-grader was tasked with interviewing and profiling a local hero, choosing Maria Perrone, FCPS director of food and nutrition services. That story led to Zhang being named one of 10 Time for Kids Kid Reporters for the 2021-2022 school year.

3. Thunderous Boom Rattles Homes From Ashburn To Alexandria: A thunderous boom heard across the D.C. area around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday had residents confused about the source of the noise. The boom could be heard from Ashburn to Centreville, east to Alexandria and D.C. and in Montgomery County, Maryland. The noise was likely caused by a lightning strike in the vicinity of Reston, where a building was struck.

4. $46K In Unreported Currency Seized By Customs At Dulles Airport: U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers were conducting a random inspection of passengers boarding a flight to Brussels, Belgium when they asked a traveler how much currency he was carrying. The man told them that he was carrying $30,000, which is what he reported on the U.S. Treasury Department form he had completed. Searching the man's carry-on bags, officers found $46,628 in U.S. currency.

5. Fallen Marine's Motorcade Passes Through Fairfax: A motorcade carrying the body of a Marine killed in Afghanistan passed through Fairfax and Arlington counties Monday. USMC Sgt. Nicole Gee, 23, was one of 13 U.S. troops killed in an attack near the Kabul airport in Afghanistan's capital on Aug. 26.
