5 Budget Requests in Front of Manassas City Council
Flood gates for the airport, in-car cameras for the police department and incentives for new businesses among the proposed budget allocation

Five new requests for funding will be presented to Manassas City Council next Tuesday, Nov. 24.
The city’s Economic Opportunity Fund, which provided incentives for new and expanded businesses in the area, has been used up. The council will discuss a resolution to move $50,000 from the Economic Development Reserve Fund into the Opportunity Fund to make it possible to approve applications for the 2015 financial year.
The City of Manassas was awarded a $35,335 grant from the 2014 State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, which reimburses the city for the costs of keeping undocumented people in city prisons. The council will discuss splitting the grant between a grant-writing service and the City of Manassas’s payments to the Adult Detention Center.

The Virginia Department of Aviation has offered $12,276 to the City of Manassas to replace a security fence at the airport. The grant will not cover the full cost of the project, so the council will discuss whether to allocate the remaining $1,364 to replace the fence with flood gates.
The City of Manassas Police Department requests $3,619 from the state and local drug seizure fund to purchase three in-car camera systems. A grant received by the police department in October will cover the rest of the cost.

The City Council will also decide whether to allocate a $3,144 Risk Management Grant, which they received from the VML Insurance Program, between the airport and the Stonewell Park Pool. A wheeled ramp dry chemical fire extinguisher would be purchased for the airport with $2,144 and $1,000 would go to the pool for drum platforms and a chemical containment system.
Also on the agenda are a proposal to declare Dec. 4 #GivingTuesday in Manassas and whether to fund a study for Lake Manassas access.
