7 Ways for Seniors to Stay Safe this Summer
Senior citizens need to be especially careful to stay safe over the summer. At Home Personal Care can help: (703) 330-2323.

Summer in Northern Virginia comes with a lot of fun, but also a lot of heat and humidity. Seniors can be especially susceptible to heat exhaustion, dehydration and other summer hazards, so this summer, make sure to check in on your senior loved ones and contact At Home Personal Care for any home care needs as you follow these [NUBMER] safety tips:
1. Watch Hydration
Hydration is important for everyone in the summer, but seniors have a harder time maintaining hydration than younger folks, and can skirt too close to dehydration before feeling it. Pack a water bottle with you everywhere you go and refill it often. Also talk with your doctor about replacing electrolytes you lose by sweating.
2. Keep Cool
Avoid being too long in the heat. Seniors have a harder time controlling their body temperature and are more susceptible to heat stroke than younger adults. Try to hang out in an air-conditioned environment or stay in the shade between 10 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. Ice your drink, sit in front of a fan and consider a cool cloth on the forehead when it’s really hot.

3. Talk with Your Doctor
Heat, perspiration and dehydration risk can impact your nutritional and medication needs, so check in with your doctor about summer medications. Also ask your pharmacist if any of your medications need to be kept in the fridge this time of year.
4. Check on Neighbors, Friends and Family
Make sure to check in with your neighbors, family and friends on a regular basis—keeping tabs on your local social circle can help you and them stay safe. If your social circle seems small, At Home Personal Care has a team of companions and senior care experts who can team up with you for the summer too: (703) 330-2323.

5. Dress to Stay Cool
Dress smart for summer heat and humidity with breathable fabrics that drape loosely for air circulation. Wear a sun hat with ventilation to shade your eyes and face, and slather on some sunscreen to prevent sunburns. Shield your eyes with sunglasses that have a strong UV blocking rating too.
6. Know the Signs of Heat Stroke and Avoid it!
Seniors can go into a state of heat stroke quickly if they’re not paying attention. Make sure to know these symptoms and seek treatment immediately if you notice them:
- Flushed, red, dry skin
- Fainting spells
- Nausea with vomiting
- Agitation, confusion or lethargy
- A body temperature of 104 or higher.
- Rapid pulse and heavy breathing
- It’s hot outside, but you’re not sweating
7. Don some Insect Repellent
If you plan to spend time outside in the wilderness this summer, make sure to put on some insect repellent. Ask your doctor or home care agency in Manassas, Warrenton or Fredericksburg for suggestions. Mosquitoes and ticks can transmit all kinds of diseases that are particularly dangerous for seniors.
