MANASSAS, VA — A Culpeper man pleaded guilty Jan. 6 in the shooting death of a Manassas-area man during a robbery attempt in 2016. Marquan Antonio Brown, 27, is scheduled to be sentenced May 1 in Prince William County Circuit Court when he will face up to three life sentences plus 15 years.
Brown pleaded guilty Monday to first-degree murder, statutory burglary while armed with a deadly weapon, robbery, and three counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony for the May 12, 2016, shooting death of 43-year-old Jason Mannion, Commonwealth's Attorney Amy Ashworth said in a news release. Mannion was shot during the robbery attempt inside his home, and he died the next day at an area hospital.
"The guilty plea in this case is a product of the steps that I have implemented to focus the Commonwealth Attorney's Office toward prosecuting violent crime with efficiency and integrity," Ashworth said in a statement.

Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Teresa A. Polinske led the prosecution of this case. Prince William County Police Sgt. Caillen B. Smith was the lead investigator.
Two other people, Rhebekah Alexis Patterson, Brown's girlfriend at the time, and Jhaire Nathaniel Montgomery, also are charged in Mannion's death and are scheduled to stand trial in February, the Prince William Times reported Jan. 7. At a preliminary hearing in the case, Patterson testified the three traveled from Culpeper to Manassas with plans to rob Mannion. They ended up stealing about $700 from him during the robbery and killing, according to the report.
