Dancia Roem Attends AMAs As Demi Lovato's Guest

Danica Roem, who earlier this month became Virginia'a first elected transgender official, was the guest of pop star Demi Lovato at the AMAs.

MANASSAS, VA — Danica Roem, who earlier this month became Virginia'a first elected transgender legislator when she won a seat in the House of Delegates, was the guest of pop music star Demi Lovato at Sunday night's American Music Awards in Los Angeles.

Roem beat longtime Del. Bob Marshall in the 13th District. He refused to debate her and often called her "Dan," although she had her name legally changed to "Danica" in 2015. Lovato — whose new single, "Sorry Not Sorry," was performed at the show — saw the reports and took notice.

"I heard her story and I think that what Danica has done is just completely inspirational and she's a trailblazer," Lovato told reporters, according to the New York Daily News. "I wanted her to join me because my performance is about bullying and she's put up with so much bullying. To be a state legislator as a trans woman is groundbreaking and incredible and I have so much respect for her."

Here's what Roem tweeted: "I'll always stand for inclusion & against bullying. Demi Lovato's performance tonight made it clear that's where she stands too. Thank you for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity @ddlovato. PWC folks: I'll be back bright & early Monday to talk education policy. See you soon! #NoH8"
