Gainesville Home Partially Gutted By Fire

Blaze caused by lightning, says Prince William fire department.

A lightning strike during a thunderstorm Wednesday afternoon sparked a fire that heavily damaged a Gainesville house.

There were no injuries in the fire, which broke out in a two-story, single-family home in tne 6300 block of Adirondack Court, according to the Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue. The Red Cross is assisting two adults displaced by the fire.

The house is in a subdivision north of Route 29 and about a mile west of the Manassas National Battlefield Park. At about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, fire and rescue crews were dispatched to the house; upon arrival, they spotted flames blazing through the roof.

As the firefighters commenced operations, the fire began to engulf the house’s second floor, causing a portion of that floor to collapse, the fire department said. The firefighters extinguished the blaze, and they found no further extension of the fire to the rest of the house.

The county Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the fire was caused by a lightning strike, and a county buiding official posted the property as unsafe. The fire department did not state the monetery value of the damage to the house caused by the fire.
