Holiday Hoe-Down Roller Derby

Vineyard Vixens and Backwoods Rollers set to battle it out for children in need this holiday season at Skate-N-Fun Zone.

'Passing the Star', 'Getting the Goat', 'The Wall', 'The Diamond', 'Ending the Jam' - these are all moves that will be preformed by a pack of athletic ladies looking to win this year's 'Holiday Hoe-Down Roller Derby' taking place Sunday evening in Manassas at the Skate-N-Fun Zone.

The bout, is a match-up between the Vineyard Vixens and Backwood Rollers who are apart of the NOVA Roller Derby league that began in April of 2011.

The sport first gained notoriety back in the 1940s with over 5 million spectators watching games in 50 different U.S. cities. After losing its popularity the sport was viewed as just entertainment similar to wrestling with scripted games where the winner was predetermined before the match even began.

But the NOVA Roller Derby league is nothing like that, according to Co-founder of NOVA Roller Derby Cynthia Cashwell.

"I've torn ligaments in my ankle...I've seen broken collarbones, broken legs, arms...but the major injuries are few and far between-nobody sets out to hurt anyone, it's safety first....'

Cashwell said participants wear full protective gear and medic staff is present for the unique sport's match ups, where offense and defense are played at the same time as each teams' Jammer attempts to pass the other teams players for points.

This weekend's event will follow the official rules of the Modern Athletic Derby Endeavor's (M.A.D.E.)

With names like 'ManassacreKK-47 and Mary Lou Wreckem, this group of ladies is sure to bring a lot of fun to rink this weekend—and its all for a good cause.

In addition to all the bumping and pushing taking place on the track this weekend,  NOVA Roller Derby is teaming up with the U.S. Marine Corps to collect donations for Toys For Tots. All attending the event are encouraged to bring a unopened toy or gift.

Doors open at 5pm. Tickets are $10 in advance and can be purchased at the door for$12. Children under 6 get in free.

Lastly, the  girl's are seeking a bigger practice venue than the Virginia National Guard Armory in Loudoun County.

Anyone along the '28 Corridor' that has a bigger facility for use should contact Cynthia Cashwell.
