Holiday Trips: Two Virginia Towns Named Among America's Best for Holiday Travel

Holidays are better in Williamsburg and Charlottesville, according to Travel and Leisure Magazine.

There’s no place like home for the holidays, but sometimes close-to-home is close enough. Travel and Leisure Magazine has pointed out the 25 best places for holiday travel and two Virginia towns made the cut.

According to the magazine’s readers, holiday gift shopping in Charlottesville beats out the malls at home and an old-time English Christmas feast in Williamsburg is incomparable to the typical holiday spread.

Williamsburg comes in at number 13 on the list, ranked high for its historical significance and “colorful people-watching,” according to Travel and Leisure. And Jamestown’s Christmas dinner preparations (roasted wild turkeys and homemade puddings) and old English traditions you’ve never heard of (Lord of Misrule, aka the anti-Santa Claus) put the town over the top as a holiday travel destination.

Charlottesville doesn’t necessarily look like a winter wonderland, but Travel and Leisure readers pushed the town to number 22 on the list for its exceptional gift options. Antique, indie and used bookstores like Monticello, New Dominion Bookshop and Read It Again, Sam offer fun and meaningful gifts you won’t find at home. Local wineries like King Family Vineyards, which sells gift-wrapped bottles of Cabernet Franc, also made Charlottesville a holiday town-to-see in the eyes of Travel and Leisure readers.
