Manassas Homicide Case Closed After Suspect Was Killed In Maryland: Police
A 2022 homicide case in Manassas was closed this week after detectives learned the primary suspect was killed in Maryland last year.

MANASSAS, VA — Detectives have completed their investigation into a 2022 Manassas homicide after they learned the primary suspect was killed in Maryland, the Prince William County Police Department said.
On Aug. 19, 2022, Dalton Jakob Moore, 25, was shot and killed near Sudley Manor Drive in Manassas.
The police department said the person of interest, a 19-year-old Manassas man, was shot and killed in an unrelated incident in Prince George's County, Maryland. Authorities have not identified the 19-year-old by name because no charges were filed.

The only 19-year-old Manassas resident killed in Prince George's County in the past six months was Carlos Benitez-Arevalo. He was pronounced dead at a gas station after suffering a gunshot wound, the Prince George's County Police Department said. Benitez Arevalo died on Aug. 21, less than 48 hours after the fatal shooting in Manassas.

The Manassas shooting occurred on Aug. 19, 2022 outside of a 7-Eleven. Investigators said Moore was sitting on the sidewalk outside of the 7-Eleven when a man approached them from behind.
After a brief exchange, the suspect pulled out a gun and started shooting. Moore died at the scene, while one of his acquaintances was injured. At the time, the police department said the suspect drove away in a light-colored sedan.

After the shooting, the Prince William County Police Department offered a $5,000 reward for information about the suspect.
On Thursday, the police department said Moore knew the suspect. Authorities noted that the suspect confronted Moore over a debt.
"Due to the death of the suspect, charges were not obtained in the Manassas homicide investigation; therefore, the identity of the alleged suspect is not being released," the police department said in a news release. "The case will be considered closed by exception, death of offender."
