Micron Technology Adding Jobs in Manassas

Tis the season for more jobs from the city's two largest employers. 

Micron Technology, Manassas' largest employer (1,650 jobs), has good news for the city. In November, the company announced a $56 million investment to increase memory chip production at its Manassas facility. The investment will create 123 new jobs when the hiring process is complete.

Micron Spokesperson Rebecca Arntz said the facility renovations and the hiring process is underway.

“It's an ongoing process,” Arntz said, adding that many of the new positions are in engineering.

Arntz also said there is no hard timetable for the hiring process. The process will complete when the company has the right number of applicants.

The Boise, Idaho-headquartered firm provides semiconductor solutions and manufactures and markets Flash memory and semiconductor systems. The Manassas plant manufactures memory chips used in cell phones, mobile music and video players, notebook computers and other high-tech devices.

The Manassas plant is Micron's “only fully owned fabrication plant,” Arntz said. Fabrication is Micron's term for memory chip plants.

“We're running on new technology here,” Arntz said. “For Micron to stay in front we need to have a team in place.”

Lockheed Martin, Manassas' second-largest employer (1,400 jobs), that it was transferring 170 jobs from its Eagan, Minn. facility to Manassas. Many of those positions will be filled by workers transferring from Eagan.

It is unclear how many Eagan-based workers will opt to relocate to Manassas.
