New Study Focuses on Easing I-66 Traffic Woes

Virginia transportation leaders and federal government team up for a new study to help ease traffic on I-66.

Anyone who lives in the Manassas-area knows the traffic nightmare that is Interstate 66.

If you live in Manassas or west of, then you know all to well there is only two roadways to get you eastbound—I-66 and Rte. 28. Both of which are complete nightmares during rush hours.

That may be why Virginia transportation leaders and the federal government are teaming up for a new study in an effort to find a possible solution to the traffic misery on I-66, WTOP radio is reporting.

A Virginia Department of Transportation letter outlines the plan for the study, which will focus on I-66 and examine the interstate from the Beltway to Route 15 in Prince William County.

Things considered in the study, include roadway improvements and better public transportation, like maybe finally extending Metro or implementing a system of fast-moving buses.

Transportation planners also tell WTOP the study should help determine any cost associated with any improvements and who is going to pay for them.

The study is not the first conducted on the local highway, but according to VDOT officials, the new study is different because it will focus purpose and need issues, as well as highlighting locations of proposed improvements "and mode/technology choice," the report by WTOP stated.
