New Traffic Pattern for Rte. 28/Wellington Intersection

Starting next week, northbound Rte. 28 motorists will use new bridge, among other changes.

Starting next week, area drivers will notice several new traffic patterns as construction progresses on the new overpass at Route 28 (Nokesville Road) and Wellington Road in Manassas.

According to VDOT officials, three changes are planned on or about July 11:

  • Traffic heading north on Route 28 will be directed over the newly constructed bridge.
  • Traffic heading to Wellington Road from northbound Route 28 will now turn right onto the new Wellington Road Connector just prior to crossing the bridge.
  • Traffic heading to northbound Route 28 from Wellington Road will now turn onto the new Wellington Road Connector just east of the new bridge.

The traffic pattern for southbound Route 28 and Wellington Road in both directions will remain the same.

VDOT says electronic message signs are in place to notify drivers and will remain in place for one week after the switch is made. Temporary construction signs will also direct drivers to and from northbound Route 28 and Wellington Road.

The new $44 million Route 28 overpass at Wellington Road and the Norfolk Southern Railroad in Manassas will eliminate the at-grade railroad crossing, according to VDOT, improving safety for motorists and pedestrians and eliminating bottlenecks for train stoppages.
