Osbourn Park Falls to Freedom, 54-48

The Osbourn Park boys basketball team lost to Freedom Wednesday night in a close match-up.

The Osbourn Park boys basketball team traveled to Freedom High School in Woodbridge last night for what turned out to be a good match-up.

Both Osbourn Park and Freedom have struggled this year and they each wanted to get a big victory last night to give their team some momentum as the playoffs are right around the corner.

The Yellow Jackets entered the game with a better overall record than Freedom, but it was Freedom that ended up coming out on top Wednesday night as they topped Osbourn Park by a final score of 54-48.

Freedom set the tone early as they were dominant in the first quarter. While Freedom was getting shots to fall, Osbourn Park could not get anything going on the offensive end. At the end of the first quarter, Freedom had a 17-6 lead.

In the second quarter, Osbourn Park came out playing better basketball. The Yellow Jackets were able to get some shots to fall and did a decent job of keeping Freedom from scoring unlike the first period. The Jackets were able to outscore Freedom 14-13 in the second quarter, but Freedom still led 30-20 at the half.

After half-time, Osbourn Park came out in the third and picked up where they left off. The Jackets controlled the pace in the third quarter and did a solid job on offense while doing an even better job defensively.

Freedom was only able to manage 11 points in the third period while O.P. was able to tally 15, which cut into Freedom’s lead. The Jackets seemed to be poised for a comeback victory as they ended the third trailing 41-35.

Trailing by six entering the fourth, O.P. came out hoping to maintain their momentum for a come-from-behind victory. Freedom, however, had other ideas.

After a dominant first quarter, Freedom had allowed Osbourn Park to play their way back into the game. In the fourth period, though, Freedom managed to play well enough to hold off the Yellow Jackets and hold on for the victory, topping Osbourn Park 54-48.

The leading performers  for Osbourn Park were:

Cameron Smith who scored 15 points

Brandon Jenkins with 13 points

Garrett Smith with 12 points

Freedom was led by Dejon Boyd who scored 21 points in the win. With the loss, Osbourn Park fell to 5-12 overall and they are 2-6 in the district. Although the Jackets have struggled this season, they are hoping to build some momentum to carry into the district tournament.
