Update: Remains Found Near Manassas Pond Identified As A 54-Year-Old Man: Police

MANASSAS, VA — Human remains that were discovered in Manassas on Sunday belonged to a 54-year-old man, the Prince William County Police Department said. Authorities are conducting more scientific analysis to officially confirm the man's identity.

In a report on Tuesday, authorities said they believed the unidentified man killed himself. The police department cited "additional remains and evidence located at the scene.

A man in Manassas found human bones on Monday afternoon, according to the Prince William County Police Department. Officers searched the area near Wellington Road and Lexington Valley Drive for more human remains on Monday afternoon.

In a report, the police department said a resident found the bones while he was walking to a nearby retention pond. Authorities took the bones to the Office of the Medical Examiner, where they determined that the bones were human.

"At this time, there does not appear to be a community concern," the police department said on social media. "It is unknown how long the remains were in the area."

Detectives with the police department's violent crimes bureau are investigating the death.
