Speak Out: Should Retailers Stop Selling Dangerous Ammunition
Mississippi mom calls on others to sign online petition in calling on CEO of Dick's Sporting Goods to stop selling dangerous ammunition.

A Mississippi mother is calling on others to sign an online petition she started in an effort to get local retailer to stop supplying high-capacity magazines for assault rifles—like the ones used by the Colorado movie theatre shooting suspect.
Getty Israel, a health teacher in Mississippi, started the petition online at SignOn.org and already has over 4,000 signatures. The petition calls on Dick's Sporting Goods CEO Edward Stack to make the "responsible corporate decision" to pull high-capacity magazines for assault rifles from store shelves and online in an attempt to curtail gun violence, according to a release issued on behalf of SignOn.org.
"By curtailing access to high capacity ammunition, we will have a better chance of preventing tragic incidents, like the one in Aurora, that claim so many innocent lives at one time," said gun violence prevention advocate Maria Roach.
"I started my petition on SignOn.org to get these weapons of mass destruction off our streets and prevent more innocent lives from being taken," Israel said.
The release said that studies show that Mississippi is the deadliest gun state, ranking at the top of the list for gun deaths per capita and permissive gun laws.
According to the release, there have been at least 56 mass murders carried out with firearms in 30 states in 30 years in the U.S. Forty-four obtained the guns used in the killings legally. Thirty-four of the 132 weapons used in the massacres were assault weapons, and sixty were semiautomatic handguns.
