Vaccinations for Seniors: 5 to Get this Fall

Check your senior loved one's vaccination records so they're current before winter. Call At Home Personal Care for help: (703) 330-2323

Wintertime illnesses and infections can come with more complications and dangers for our elderly loved ones. Help them keep track of their vaccination schedule to make sure they are current on all critical vaccines and ask the doctor if others are recommended, particularly if they plan to travel, visit sick friends or be around young children.

1. Influenza

People over the age of 65 are far more likely to be hospitalized with complications from the flu each year, so help your loved one get a regularly-scheduled update to their flu shot each fall so they’ll be as protected as they can be from this year’s strains. And because the flu shot isn’t always a bull’s eye, help them stay well hydrated, well rested, and up with their doctor-recommended exercise and nutrition program to help boost immunity overall.

2. Singles (Zoster)

The chicken pox virus can lie dormant in your system for decades, emerging again, most likely after the age of 60, as something called “shingles”. This vaccine can lower the incidence of this painful disease for many seniors.

3. Pneumococcal Disease Vaccine

Check whether your senior loved one has this vaccine up-to-date this year, particularly if they have chronic lung or cardiovascular conditions. This vaccine builds immunity to the streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria that might cause anything from pneumonia and blood infections to middle ear infections and bacterial meningitis.

4. Pertussis (“Whooping Cough”)

If you plan to visit grandchildren—especially babies and small children—this season, make sure your pertussis booster is current. While children are more likely to die from this disease than older people, children often contract the disease from older family members who may not have severe symptoms.

5. Diphtheria and Tetanus

This booster needs to be re-administered every 10 years. Sometimes it comes with the pertussis vaccine, and it’s important to get this if you’re planning international travel.
