Parks and Recreation Seeks Teen Input for Skate Park

Manassas Park Parks and Recreation is looking to have a new skate park in the city before next summer.

The Manassas Park Department of Parks and Recreation is looking for help in planning an outdoor skate park in ,  department of parks and recreation director Catherine Morretta said at the Park and Recreation Citizens' Committee meeting Thursday. 

Parks and recreation is looking for input about what kind of equipment skaters would like to see, as well as proposals for the location. Parks and Recreation is currently planning to replace half of the free basketball courts in Costello Park with the skate park and open it by the spring of 2012, according to Morretta.

—The Second Annual Doggie Paddle fundraiser will be Saturday, Sept. 10, in the pool at Signal Hill Park, Morretta said.  The entry fee is $5 an animal and there will be an opportunity for residents to register their dog with animal control. Last year, 90 dogs raced in the event. 

—The Manassas Park 10-mile run will be Saturday, Oct. 8. The race will start at Manassas Park City Hall and progress down Manassas Drive toward General’s Ridge Golf Course.

 Morretta also told the committee the department collected $144,428 in revenue in July and $121,081 in June, both figures are increases from the previous year’s revenue.

Twenty-four of the 26 general recreation planned programs at the community center were implemented, she said. Twenty-eight of the 34 camps were implemented over the summer. Out of the 10 athletic camps planned, nine were implemented. 

The committee’s next meeting is Sept. 8 at the Manassas Park Community Center on Adams Street.
