is a typical, moderately-sized deli located in Samantha’s Corner, a shopping center bordered by Mathis Avenue and Centreville Road. Of course, because it’s a deli, we don’t have to worry about the seating and menu issues often incurred during these visits.
I really wanted a breakfast sandwich, but it was almost an hour past the cut-off time for breakfast, so I decided I wouldn’t request special service on my first visit.
I ordered a steak and cheese sub and fries. My order took about 15 minutes to make. I was the only one in there initially, but then a couple walked in about five to seven minutes later and this seemed to slow the service down a bit.
The sub was OK. They toasted the bun, which pleased me because a lot of delis don’t do this. Grilled mushrooms, green peppers, raw onions and, of course, cheese were in there, but not very much. I couldn't really taste the ingredients because the bread dominated the taste buds. I think if there were more meat and cheese, and if the onions were grilled, it would have been a very good sub.
The fries were the crinkle cut, straight-out-the-grocery store variety, but what I did like—and this is probably due to the deli's small size— is that they prepared my fries fresh. All in all, I thought the food and place was pretty mediocre. The employees seemed nice; they didn’t say much, but nice, nevertheless.
The place was rather plain, but nice and clean. Of course this is a typical banker's hours deli, so don’t use this week's Salt and Pepper to plan your Friday night out on the town.
If I'm around those parts early enough, I might try a breakfast sandwich. I’m sure the regulars know exactly what to order, so if any of you are reading this column, drop me a comment. The deli also offers catering, so if anyone has tried it, I’d be curious to know how it turned out.
