7 Fairfax County Fire And Rescue Members Positive For Coronavirus

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department reported Tuesday seven of its members tested positive for the new coronavirus, which causes COVID-19 illness. Of the seven members, two have recovered and five remain positive for the new coronavirus. The fire department says these are the latest numbers as of 5 p.m. Sunday, April 12.

Three of the cases are attributed to exposure on duty, the fire department says. An additional seven members are under self-quarantine.

The known cases were either tested at a site designated for first responders or received a testing order from a private physician. The assigned work locations of the seven members were not disclosed.

The fire department confirmed the first case involving a member on April 9. After feeling ill on March 18, the member was tested eight days later. The member experienced mild symptoms and was recovering at home.

As of Tuesday, the Fairfax County Health Department reported 1,207 cases in the health district, the most of any locality in Virginia. The health district's numbers cover Fairfax County and the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church. The death total for the health district is 21, and 18 of these deaths are among residents 65 and up.

Fairfax County residents are receiving information in the mail from the health department starting this week. The health department provides instructions on what to do when ill or close contact with someone who is ill.
