MCLEAN, VA — A driver was killed when a tree fell on his vehicle while he was driving on George Washington Parkway on Thursday morning, according to U.S. Park Police.

The incident occurred near the ramp from Route 123 in McLean , according to reports.

All north and south lanes were closed temporarily, causing backups of up to 3 miles in length, according an alert from the Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination Program.

At 9 a.m., southbound lanes remained blocked and northbound traffic was being diverted to Spout Run Parkway in Arlington, according to MATOC. Delays remained and extended to Glebe Road/Route 120, Route 123 and the Chain Bridge.

Around 2 p.m., all lanes in both directions had reopened on the parkway, according to MATOC.
