Fairfax County Police Assistant Chief Retires, Takes NC Job

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Fairfax County Police Assistant Chief Brooke Wright is retiring after nearly three decades with the department and will continue her law enforcement career in North Carolina, police said Friday.

Wright has been appointed assistant chief with the Wilmington Police Department in North Carolina, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Wright began her public safety career with Fairfax County police as a 9-1-1 call taker in 1998 before entering the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy in 1999. During her 27-year career, she held several leadership roles, including assistant commander and commander of the Mason District Station, major and director of the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy, deputy chief of administration and assistant chief of investigations.

For more than three years, Wright led the department’s Investigations Bureau, overseeing major criminal investigations and specialized investigative units, police said. The department said she also helped support victims and their families and worked to ensure investigations were conducted with fairness, transparency and compassion.

As director of the Criminal Justice Academy, Wright helped develop and mentor future Fairfax County police officers, according to the department.

Wright is retiring after 27 years and joining the Wilmington, North Carolina police.

Wright is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Virginia and a bachelor’s degree from Bluefield College.

She also graduated from the FBI National Academy, the Major Cities Chiefs’ Association Police Executive Leadership Institute, the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police Professional Executive Leadership School, the International Association of Chiefs of Police Women’s Leadership Institute and Leadership Fairfax.

“Fairfax County has been the community that shaped me as a leader, challenged me to grow, and trusted me to serve at every level of this organization,” Wright said in a statement. “I am profoundly grateful for the colleagues, mentors, and community members who have been part of my journey, and I carry with me immense pride in what we have built together as I begin this next chapter with the Wilmington Police Department.”
