As voting begins, we want to start with something that too often gets lost in political coverage: the people living inside the policies we debate.
Immigration is not an abstraction. It affects students wondering whether college is still within reach, parents trying to navigate a complicated legal system, families worried about detention and enforcement, and communities trying to understand what local police, sheriffs and federal immigration authorities can and cannot do.
So Friday we are looking at immigration from three different human perspectives: the student, the person inside the legal system, and the community.Then we’ll close with a special spotlight on another question about government, history and public space: the proposed 250-foot arch near Arlington National Cemetery, where veterans and preservation advocates are speaking out.
And underneath all of it is the vote. September 18 is the beginning of voting season in Virginia. This is when we want people getting informed, making their voting plans and understanding what is happening around them.

After a cool and wet spring, the recent stretch of warm temperatures has many families thinking about pool days, summer activities, and how they want to spend the months ahead. With Fairfax County schools preparing to wrap up for the year, now is the perfect time to make plans for a summer filled with recreation, friendship, and community. The McLean Swim &amp; Tennis Association (MSTA) is currently welcoming new members and, unlike many area clubs, we have both Equity and Seasonal Rental Memberships available with no waiting list. Located in the heart of McLean, MSTA offers a family-friendly environment where members can enjoy swimming, tennis, social events, and a strong sense of community throughout the summer season. For families looking to keep children active during the school break, MSTA is home to the McLean Marlins Swim Team and offers opportunities for swimmers of all experience levels. Whether your child is just learning the fundamentals of competitive swimming or is looking to continue developing their racing skills, there are opportunities to participate and grow in a supportive environment. In addition to swim team activities, MSTA hosts summer swim camps and tennis camps that help children stay active, build confidence, and make new friends during the summer months. Good Beginnings at Redeemer Renaissance Preschool

During the 2026-27 school year, except during the month of December, Good Beginnings participants will come together twice per month October - May. This Redeemer Renaissance Preschool class, led by a teacher, welcomes toddlers and caregivers to promote a sense of wonder, discovery, and exploration while providing a fun introduction to preschool and our curriculum. Children will build their first friendships and work with new materials as they engage in open-ended play in a safe, developmentally appropriate environment. Classes for 2's, 3's, and 4's are offered for mornings and all day. Good Beginnings, a class for children and their caretaker, is offered for children 1.5 years - 2.5 years. Children learn and flourish as they wonder and learn, building a foundation to ensure their success through use of the Creative Curriculum, vetted by the Virginia Department of education. The curriculum is play-based and with nature-based components incorporated, promotes healthy development in children as they discover and explore in our outdoor natural play area.﻿﻿ Small classes led by experienced teachers can be found singing, jumping, building, making friends, painting, writing, counting, and observing chickens hatch as one of their STEM projects in the Learning Lab. Days when the weather is too cold or rainy find classes in the full-size indoor gym and fellowship hall. Children find joy in activities such as riding trikes, building with large manipulatives, designing and testing obstacle courses, running, throwing balls, and playing games.
